Thirsty Thursday
Feeling a bit thirsty today? Lobo Cider has you covered. The Royale is a cider guaranteed to quench every kind of thirst.
This is their flagship small batch cider, it has been partially keeved. Keeving is an artisan method for making naturally sweetened cider. Only cider apples are used in this method, no added sugar or water. Pectin gel forms and floats to the top of the fresh pressed apple juice. This process allows for a long and slow fermentation which then finishes and the cider can be bottled without any fear of further fermentation later. The Royale is made with a mix of cider apples and some of the LOBO base blend. This particular cider has a greater proportion of Somerset Red Streak apples.
This cider lives up to being a true cloudy cider but with a beautiful amber colour that I haven't seen before. It is the kind of colour I would usually associate with beer. A beautiful smell hits your nose, tart, slightly fermented and a bit earthy, while still distinctly apple. As you taste this cider you experience the sweeter notes of the apple and then a tangy acidity comes across your palate, with an undertone of earthy flavour. The taste lingers long after you take a sip. On their website they recommend drinking this alongside roast pork and I have to agree that this would work perfectly to balance out the fattiness of the meat. It would also be perfect to have with spicy food, particularly Asian cuisine. The sweet notes would balance out the spicy and the tart would cut through any saltiness. On its own this cider is also a wonderful drink and you get to enjoy all its flavours and levels without any distraction.
