Strong Scrumpy Cider
Bridge Road Brewers is full of passionate people working to bring you some of the best beer around. Their small batch, hands on brewing technique means that every bottle of beer gets the attention it deserves and thus the customer gets a quality product each time. The Scrumpy Cider is made from freshly pressed apples grown in the Alpine foothills behind Beechworth. The brewery is based in Beechworth, so you know they are getting the apples straight from the tree making sure their cider is as fresh as possible. They avoid using sulphates to stop the fermentation process and there is no added sugars or flavourings. An English farmhouse yeast strain is used to make this cider and it also spends time on Yeast Lees, which refers to the deposits from the secondary fermentation process. In winemaking, regions such as Champagne use this process while varieties like Chardonnay are aged for a time on Yeast Lees leading to a yeasty bready aroma and taste.

This cider has a deep warm brown colour compared to most ciders, whose colours run more towards the yellow side of the colour spectrum. It is quite cloudy and very opaque. Since this cider has spent time on Yeast Lees it defiantly has a nose very similar to Champagne, full of bread and yeast notes. There is also tartness underlying all the yeastiness that brings a nice fresh smell to the cider. The taste is very dry with a short finish. There isn't really any sweetness to be found and I personally would have liked a little more apple flavour but I can see why they recommend drinking this with foods like roast pork. The dry tartness would help offset the rich fattiness of the pork and create balance. This is still a very refreshing cider and would be great on a hot day. A great summer cider.
