Friday Wine day

Another week is coming to a close and it's almost time to put your feet up and enjoy a good glass of wine. Weekends for me just mean more work but that doesn't mean I can't relax with a delicious wine once the day is over. This weekend I will be reminiscing about my trip to Clare Valley last year with a bottle of 2014 Watervale Riesling from Kappstein's Ackland Vineyard.

The Ackland Vineyard is located at 450 to 500meters above sea level, the vines are planted in fertile red loam soil (which contains more nutrients and humus then sandy soils, has much better drainage and infiltration of water and air) over calcium calcrete with large pockets of slate scattered throughout. In summer the weather can shift quite dramatically, know as diurnal, a variation between high temperatures and low temperatures during the same day. Resulting in wine with classic citrus and floral flavours.

The colour of this wine is a beautiful shimmering gold. I could get lost looking into my glass and watching the way it catches the light. Sticking my moderately sized nose into the glass and taking a big whiff leads to bright and fresh citrus notes, hints of greenery, not a specific plant smell but just a freshness that reminds me of walking around in nature. A vague hint of petrol/mineral aroma but its just an undertone that is overshadowed by the others. The over all smell is very subtle, you really need to get your nose in there to take it all in. On the tongue this wine is bursting with delightful citrus like lime, but not just fresh lime more of dried dehydrated lime. There is a small amount of sweetness but not from sugar just from the fruit itself. Clean and fresh, this is a delightfully easy drinking wine and you may find yourself hard pressed to resist having another glass after the first one is gone.

If you haven't been to Clare Valley to visit their cellar door then I suggest you start planning your next holiday and if that isn't in the cards yet, do yourself a flavour and pick up one of their wines today to celebrate the weekend.
